　　上次跟大家分享出國時租車時，常用到的英文。我們特別聊到，租車以前一定要注意年齡限制，因為每個國家可以開車的規定不同，務必確定同行且要開車的人符合年齡資格。民以食為天，今天我們就先來討論去餐廳時，會用到的英文，也順便跟大家分享出國去餐廳要注意的事情。

　　對於餐廳，我的經驗是，當地人往往知道最值得去的餐廳，因為當地人長久生活在那邊，如果他們常去的，必定是味道最為道地（相較於專門給觀光客的餐廳）。我習慣故意去飯店附近的超商、店舖，買瓶水，結帳時跟店員簡單裝熟，請店員建議餐廳：

This is my first time being here from Taiwan, and this area is so clean! Since I am new, I really don’t know where to eat. Could you suggest any good restaurants?

（我從台灣來第一次來，你們這邊環境好乾淨喔！我初到這邊，實在不知道要去哪裡吃東西。你可以介紹好的餐廳嗎？）

你也可以更明確點：

I am actually looking for a place to eat. Could you recommend places that local people often go to and have the most authentic (Korean, Japanese, Italian…etc，視你去哪裡而定) food?

（其實我正在找吃的地方。你可以推薦當地人常去而且有最道地的（韓國、日本、義大利）料理的餐廳嗎？）

你到了餐廳。許多餐廳會有領台（host，也就是你一進忙就會過來招呼你的那位，他們通常有會幫你帶位）。

• 領台：How many people do you have?

（你們一共幾位？）

• 你：Three, and may we have a table next to the window?

（三位，我們可以坐窗邊嗎？）

        今天要分享的英文俗諺是Constant dropping wears away the stone，中文可以翻成「滴水穿石」。藉著這句俗諺，要跟大家分享英文的「動名詞」（gerund）。

動名詞，大家應該不陌生。動名詞是動詞原式加-ing，不隨主詞的人稱和數而變化，用作名詞。動名詞的用法如下列數種：

• 用作主詞：

Constant dropping wears away the stone.

動名詞dropping是由動詞drop加上-ing演變而來，作名詞用。

Playing tennis is a very good exercise for teenagers.

（網球對年輕人來說是非常好的運動）

動名詞Playing是由動詞Play加上-ing演變而來，作名詞用。

動名詞除了具有名詞性質，還具有動詞性質，故後面可接受詞tennis。

動名詞片語Playing tennis是整個句子的主詞。

• 用作及物動詞的受詞

I like playing tennis, but most of my friends like playing baseball.

（我喜歡打網球，而我多數朋友則喜歡打棒球）

Playing為動名詞。

One of my friends likes to spend his free time reading.

(我一位朋友閒暇時喜歡閱讀)

動名詞reading是由動詞read加上-ing演變而來，作名詞用。

You need to stop eating too much as you need to lose weight, if you want to live a healthy life.（如果你要活得健康的話，就必須停止過量飲食以減重）

動名詞eating是動詞eat加上-ing演變而來，作名詞用。

上面提到，動名詞還具有動詞性質，故後面可接副詞too much作為修飾用途。

• 用作補語

Seeing is believing.（眼見為憑）

動名詞believing是動詞believe加上-ing，作為補語。

(這邊seeing也是動名詞，作為主詞用。)

My favorite hobby is hiking and enjoying the nature.

(我最愛的嗜好是健行及欣賞大自然）

動名詞hiking是動詞hike加上-ing演變而來，作為補語。

下次大家看到「動詞加上-ing」的句型，可千萬不要認為一定是動詞的進行式，

也有可能是動名詞，兩者在句中的功能可不一樣。

    (Wednesday 7 January, 11.30am local time)Two *gunmen - Chérif Kouachi and his brother Saïd - storm the offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris.        大家今年的跨年怎麼過呢？是和家人朋友們去狂歡倒數還是早早上床睡覺？我們來看看號稱最會享樂的拉丁美洲人們是怎麼歡度新年吧！

1. The first person you kiss is your new love. They say the first person you lock lips with once the ball drops will remain faithful and in love with you throughout the year, so don’t get too drunk and end up kissing some fool.

你第一個親吻的人會是你的新戀人。

當新年的彩球迸開時你的嘴唇碰到的那個人會死心踏地的愛你一整年，所以可別在那個時刻喝醉亂親人喔~

2. Brazilians believe that celebrating the new year dressed in all white will attract good luck and bring you peace. You’ll also get red wine and cognac stains all over your outfit, so plan accordingly and buy a cheap dress.

穿著白色洋裝。

巴西人相信這樣的穿著可以為妳帶來好運。不過也不要穿著太昂貴的洋裝，因為它可能會在跨年的時候沾到紅酒或是白蘭地。

穿著白色洋裝的奧斯卡影后Lupita其實是在墨西哥出生的喔！也算是半個拉丁人啦！

3. Make sure you’re wearing red or yellow panties. Apparently wearing a pair of red undies on New Year’s Eve will ensure a year filled with passion and love, and wearing a pair of yellow undies will attract happiness and financial success. So you pick: for love or for money?

穿著紅色或黃色的內褲。人們相信這紅色可以讓新的一年充滿熱情及愛情(真不愧是拉丁人呀)，黃色則是喜悅以及財富。所以你們想好要愛情還是金錢了嗎？！

4. Wear your undies inside out. But fix them during the first few minutes of the new year.

內褲反穿(！)。將內褲內外反過來穿，然後在新年的一分鐘之內換穿回來。

5. Eat 12 grapes for 12 amazing months. Latinos believe that eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight — one for every month of the year — will ensure you prosperity in the new year. Make a wish for every grape you eat, but beware of sour grapes. Eating one may mean that you have at least one bad month ahead of you.

在午夜鐘聲敲響時吃十二顆葡萄。人們相信每吃一顆葡萄就代表每個月分，吃下去的葡萄將會使你新的一年欣欣向榮；如果吃到一顆酸葡萄就代表會有一個月運氣不太好。

6. Make some noise to scare away monsters. Evil spirits hate loud noises, so the louder and crazier your party is, the more likely ghosts will never make it in the house. Party hard.

發出噪音把怪獸給嚇走！妖魔鬼怪們很討厭吵鬧聲，所以你的派對越瘋狂、越大聲，他們就不會進去你的房子。所以盡情派對吧！

7. Pack your bags and walk around the block. For the travel-obsessed: Latinos believe that doing this means you’ll travel a lot more.

揹著你的行李在附近走來走去。對於喜歡趴趴走的人來說，這麼做可以讓你接下來的一年有比較多的機會到處旅行。

8. Burn all the bad stuff. Write out a list of everything that bothered you in the year, burn it, and vow to leave it all in the past so you won’t deal with it in the new year.

將所有不好的東西給燒了。把你過去一年的煩惱寫在一張紙上，想像著要把他們留在過去然後燒了它，這樣你在新的一年就不需要繼續面對那些煩惱了。

9. Make it rain: Toss a bucket of water out the window or throw a cup of water over your shoulder. It’s supposed to mean you’re getting rid of last year’s tears and problems.

10.  Don’t sweep your house. Because if you do, you’ll sweep away your good luck for the next year. No worries, you can sweep up all the Solo cups and dirty napkins the morning after.

今年八月時在美國密蘇里州發生的麥可布朗槍擊事件(Shooting of Michael Brown)震驚全美國，自那時候開始，至今在美國甚至是世界各地也都有多起抗議此事的示威遊行活動。

接著看看名人被發現偷吃之後標準的SOP

1. 和另一半道歉

事件發生後，第一個處理的通常是另一半的情緒，要安撫他讓他冷靜下來。

例句：

• You have my sincere apology.  我誠心誠意向你道歉。
• You cannot believe how sorry I am.  你不知道我感到多麼抱歉。
• Words cannot describe how sorry I am.  語言無法描述我對你的歉意。
• I really feel bad about it.  我真的感到很內疚。

2. 召開記者會

記者會上名人會說些甚麼呢?

      酒吧算是西方世界中再普通不過的場所了，下班或下課之後自己去那邊喝一杯放鬆，或是和三五好友小聚，酒吧就好像海產店之於台灣人一般地重要啊！近幾年來因為外國觀光客以及來自西方國家的在台工作者越來越多，特色小酒館也日益增加。

      如果你曾經或是正在國外，應該更加可以體會酒吧是個多重要的地方，不只可以和朋友們拉近距離，也是一個認識當地人以及練習語言的好所在！我們今天就來分享一些在國外常見的酒類以及會用到的句子：

Bartender: What would you like to drink?

亞當：麻煩給我一杯Stella生啤。

相較於Draught，這些是其他常見種類的說法：

瓶裝啤酒：bottled beer

罐裝啤酒：canned beer

一壺：a pitcher

龍舌蘭shot: Tequila shot/ a shot of tequila:

Tequila shot是非常普遍的派對飲料，通常杯口會抹上一圏鹽(有些酒吧不抹鹽，直接給你一盤鹽巴)，一口飲盡之後再咬一口檸檬。

John: Let’s have another round of tequila shot!

Jane: No way! You are drunk!

John: Says who? I’m so sober right now.

約翰：讓我們再來一輪龍舌蘭shot吧！

珍：才不要，你醉了！

約翰：誰說的？我現在超清醒的。

House wine

相較於整瓶裝的紅酒，house是賣單杯的，價位低，當然口感也不是那麼好。

Jane: I’m getting tipsy on just one glass of wine.

John: You are such a light-weight drinker.

珍：一小杯紅酒就已經讓我有點茫了。

約翰：你酒量真差。

酒吧打烊前的最後一輪點單：Last call

John: What else would you like? It’s the last call.

Jane: No thanks, I feel terrible right now, I think I’m going to puke…

約翰：你還要點甚麼嗎？最後一輪了。

珍：不了，謝謝，我感覺超不舒服的，我覺得我要吐了…

去國外旅遊，第一關就是要先通過目的地國家的海關。海關先問你說：

May I see your passport?

我可以看一下你的護照嗎？

接著，海關就會問你另一個例行問題：

What is the purpose of your visit?

你這次前來的目的是什麼？

如果你是商務目的，可以說：

I am here for business

I am here to conduct business

或就簡單說：Business。

如果你是去上學，你可以說：

I am here for college.（我來就讀大學。）

I am here for graduate school.（我來就讀研究所）

I came here to get my PhD（我來就讀博士班）

如果你是去參加學術研討，或許你可以這樣回答：

I came here to attend the American Psychological Association conference.

我來這邊參加美國心裡學會的研討會。

你回答之後，海關可能會再追問詳細問題，譬如你回答：

I am here for my college.

海關可能會出自好奇，再問你：

Oh, really! What school are you attending?

喔，真的嗎！你要就讀哪間大學？

我要說的是，這邊只能跟大家分享一些很可能會發生的情況，但這些也只是通例，每次你出國碰到的情況，一定會有所不同。我的經驗是，海關大多都很有耐心，他們碰多了許多國外來且不諳他們語言的遊客，所以不要緊張，一次聽不懂海關講什麼，跟他講：

Could you please repeat what you just said?

可以請你重複一次嗎？

放輕鬆慢慢聽，加上一些比手畫腳，一定可以輕鬆過海關！

倘若你是飛東南亞國家，就更簡單了，空服人員只會問你需要什麼肉：

What would you like to eat? Chicken, fish, beef, or pork?

您想要吃什麼？雞肉、魚肉、牛肉，或豬肉？

如果想吃雞肉，只要回應chicken；想吃牛肉，只要回答beef即可。再來，空服人員也會問你有沒有想喝什麼：

What would you like to drink?

您想要喝點什麼？

你可以回答：

May I have a glass of water?

我可以要一杯水嗎？

Could you give me a glass of orange juice?

可以給我一杯柳橙汁嗎？

今天要延續飛機上的英文討論，繼續模擬各種可能發生的情境，和大家討論如何用英文應對。

情境一、等到飛機飛到高空中，如果氣流情況穩定，機長通常都會廣播可以解開安全帶。這時，如果你想要去廁所，但找不到，可以這麼問：

Could you please tell me where the bathroom is?

（bathroom是廁所，也可以說restroom）

你可以跟我講廁所在哪嗎？

情境二、飛機上因為氣流不穩，所以會稍微顛陂，可能會導致有些人嘔吐。如果你想吐，可以跟空姐要一個嘔吐袋：

Excuse me, I need a sick bag.

不好意思，我需要一個嘔吐袋

情境三、當然，你也可以向空姐或是隔壁乘客要一顆暈機藥：

Can I have an airsickness pill?

（airsickness：暈機；pill：藥丸）

我可以要一顆暈機藥嗎？

情境四、你可能也需要一杯水服藥：

I also need a glass of warm water.

（water、milk、wine等這些不可數名詞，前面要加上「容器」來表示數量。例如：a glassof water：一杯水。a bottle of milk：一瓶牛奶）

我也需要一杯溫水。

情境五、每個座位上，都會預先給乘客一件被毯。但是飛機上的冷氣真的開很強，如果你身體不舒服，而要多一件保暖，可以跟空姐要：

May I have one more blanket? I don’t think one is enough for me.

（blanket：被毯）

我可以多要一件被毯嗎？我想一件對我來說不夠。
